We stayed across the lake from Ambleside and it was much quieter and prettier.
Be prepared to pay for parking and toilet access in all public areas in the Lake District and only a credit card is acceptable for payment.

Beautiful town and friendly people.
Beautiful town and friendly people. We ate lunch three times (in four days!) at Fresher's Café and really enjoyed the food (obviously). They have their own delicious home-made quiches. I am sure this has to be the friendliest place to eat in the Lake District. Special mention to Michael, who was super helpful and humorous.
On the day we did not eat there, we went next door! To the Great North Pie Co and I had the best steak and ale pie I have ever had. It was served on mashed potato, with mushy peas and onion gravy.
The location was perfect, just a minutes walk into the centre of Ambleside, with parking directly outside the property. The views from the apartment were amazing. Check in was very easy picking the keys up on arrival from outside the apartment. The owner, Dave, was available at all times if needed and was very welcoming. The bottle of Prosecco on arrival was also a lovely added touch. Would definitely return in the near future.
The staff I met at ferndale was lovely and the hotel was a very short walk from all the bars and restaurants. Amazing views, hotel provided hand wash, body wash and clean towels, and they put me in the dog friendly room at the back of the building which I was thankful so I wasn’t worried about barking ect. I have been to the lakes for the last few years and this is the only hotel I would be happy to visit again.
Location, hotel reception was very helpful, restaurant was very good with a doggie menu which I found was a nice touch, breakfast had a good selection and the Skelwith grill was exceptional. My room was comfortable but located on the top floor were I found the stairs hard for me to navigate at my age. Furniture is quite dated but understandable for a budget hotel. overall I rate the hotel four star.
Upon arrival the staff were very friendly and helpful, the room exceeded our expectations and the views from our room were amazing. A kettle with tea, coffee and hot chocolate facilities were included and there was a fridge too. Breakfast was really tasty and we had a couple of options. Located in the center of Ambleside and just a few minutes walk out from the shops and all the restaurants.
Location is excellent at the top of Lake Windermere. We had a view of the lake from our room so very pleased with that. Room was adequately spacious and comfortable. Staff always very friendly and available. Over all the hotel suited and provided all we required.
Dog friendly hotel. We don't have a dog but appreciated the restaurant separating those with dogs from those who don't.
The room was larger than we expected and exceptionally clean. The continental breakfast was excellent with a huge choice of fruit and a good choice of other food. The staff were welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. Our room overlooked the park opposite the hotel and had views of the mountains beyond. The hotel has an excellent location near the centre of Ambleside.
I absolutely loved my time in Wanslea guest house, the room was so cosy and the location was amazing right in ambleside town centre lots to do around & amazing food options! The breakfast included in the room was really nice with lots of options too I would 100% recommend this B&B and would love to stay here again. The owners were so kind and helpful too.
Perfect location , convenient for everything in ambleside
Parking space outside is very valuable in ambleside
The property was very central but at the same time it was in a very quiet spot
There are many walks in the area from the doorstep
The room was spacious and clean. The staff very friendly and welcoming. A car park!!! which is hard to find right in the centre of Ambleside so a good plus. Great breakfast. Dog friendly with biscuits bowl and dog bed in the room.
The room and bed were massive with a nice view overlooking the street café. Expect to pay a little more in the Lake District, but the Ambleside location was a very good hiking/biking base. "English breakfast" was tasty.
The staff were brilliant and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble. Great location in the center of Ambleside. Good breakfast to set me up for a days walking. Extensive evening bar menu. Thank you.
A great Guesthouse with super friendly owners and staff who know the area well and can help with your stay. Brilliant location in Ambleside with parking. Great breakfast
the location, the hotel it self and the staff were amazing! Also how dog friendly the whole place is it really made it so easy for me on my first trip alone with the dog
